Hot Air Balloon Tour

Cappadocia’s valleys from 300 metres, before the day begins.

The Valleys From 300 Metres

This is a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Cappadocia valleys with a licensed commercial pilot, including hotel pickup, a light breakfast at the launch site, full passenger insurance, a champagne celebration and a flight certificate. The flight lasts 45 to 60 minutes and costs €150 per person, with a €15 registration fee paid on the day.

Cappadocia is one of the three or four places on earth where the geology reads better from the air than from the ground. The valleys were cut by water and wind into cones, ridges and hollows, and from 300 metres the whole system is visible at once — which is why the balloon, not the viewpoints, is the thing people remember.

How the Morning Runs

Hotel pickup in the dark04:00 – 04:45

Pickup from your cave hotel in Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp or Çavuşin. The exact time is confirmed the evening before and shifts with the season — later in summer, earlier in winter.

Light breakfast at the launch site04:45 – 05:30

Tea, coffee and a light breakfast while the crew inflates the balloon. Watching 60 tonnes of fabric fill with hot air before dawn is half the experience; the other half is the silence when the burners go quiet.

Sunrise flight05:30 – 06:30

Between 45 and 60 minutes in the air, at altitudes from treetop level to 300 metres. The pilot drops low into the valleys for the fairy chimneys and rises for the panorama over Göreme and Uçhisar Castle. Landing sites vary with the wind.

Landing and celebration06:30 – 07:15

The ground crew recovers the balloon, then the traditional champagne toast and your flight certificate. Transfer back to your hotel by 07:30, in time for breakfast.

About This Experience

Cappadocia is one of the three or four places on earth where the geology reads better from the air than from the ground. The valleys were cut by water and wind into cones, ridges and hollows, and from 300 metres the whole system is visible at once — which is why the balloon flight, not the viewpoints, is the thing people remember.

The flight suits almost anyone: no experience, no fitness requirement, and the basket is stable enough for passengers who are nervous about heights. It is weather-dependent, and grounded roughly one morning in five. Children over 6 may fly; pregnancy, recent surgery and serious heart conditions require a doctor's clearance.

When To Go

Flights operate year-round with seasonal pickup times: April to October between 04:00 and 05:00, November to March between 05:00 and 06:00. Spring and autumn give the most reliable launches and the most dramatic light — cool mornings with a low sun and long shadows across the valleys. July and August are reliable but the air is drier and hazier. Winter flights are the most beautiful and the most often cancelled: snow on the cones is extraordinary, but wind and ice ground the fleet perhaps two mornings in five. Book the first morning of your stay, not the last.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the flight is cancelled?

Weather cancellations are decided by the civil aviation authority the evening before or early that morning. You are offered the next available slot during your stay or a full refund, including the registration fee. This is why we recommend booking the first morning, not the last.

How high does the balloon go?

The pilot works between treetop level and about 300 metres, depending on wind. Low passes through the valleys are the most spectacular part; the climb is for the panorama over Göreme and Uçhisar.

Is it safe for children or elderly passengers?

Children over 6 may fly, with a guardian. The basket has a waist-high solid side and the flight is smooth — most nervous passengers relax within five minutes. Pregnancy beyond 28 weeks, recent surgery and serious heart conditions require a doctor's clearance.

How many people are in the basket?

Between 12 and 20, depending on the basket size and the operator's allocation for that morning. Private baskets for two to four passengers are available at a supplement — ask at booking.

Is the €15 registration fee included?

No. Turkish civil aviation charges a per-passenger registration fee of 15 EUR, which is collected on the morning of the flight. Everything else — flight, insurance, breakfast, transfers, certificate — is included in the price.
