Professional Photo Tour

Four hours at the right light, in a city photographed badly all day.

Four Hours of the Right Light

This is a four-hour photography tour of Istanbul with a working photographer-guide, covering the Old City courtyards, the Grand Bazaar and two private rooftop viewpoints. It starts at 07:00 in summer and 08:00 in winter, and costs €100 per person.

Istanbul is the most photographed city in the region and the most badly photographed, because the light is wrong for eight hours of the day and the crowds are wrong for the other four. This route is built around that constraint: it moves you between locations as the light changes, with instruction on site rather than in a classroom.

About This Experience

Istanbul is the most photographed city in the region and the most badly photographed, because the light is wrong for eight hours of the day and the crowds are wrong for the other four. This tour is built around that constraint: it moves you between locations as the light changes rather than following a fixed route.

Your guide is a working photographer, not a guide with a camera. The route covers the Old City's courtyards and mosques in the soft morning light, the Grand Bazaar when the skylights come on, and two rooftop viewpoints at the end. It suits travellers with a phone and travellers with a full kit — the instruction is the same.

When To Go

This is a light-dependent tour, so the season matters more than for any other experience here. April to June and September to October give soft morning light, long shadows and fewer crowds in the courtyards. July and August are still workable — the route starts at 07:00 and finishes before the heat flattens the light. December to February is the best season for mood: low sun, wet cobbles and the Grand Bazaar lit from inside. Rain does not cancel the tour; it changes the route to the covered bazaar and the cistern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a professional camera?

No. Half of our guests shoot on a phone. The instruction is about light, framing and timing rather than equipment, and everything taught on the route applies to a phone camera.

What time does it start?

07:00 in summer and 08:00 in winter, because the first two hours after sunrise are the reason the tour exists. Sunset versions run from 16:00 and finish at the Blue Mosque at dusk.

Are the rooftops guaranteed?

Both viewpoints are private spaces we have standing access to. In rare cases one is closed for maintenance, and the route substitutes a third rooftop in the same district.

Can I bring a tripod?

Yes, a small one. Full-size tripods are not permitted inside the mosques and obstruct the bazaar passages. A monopod or a tabletop tripod is the practical choice.

Is this suitable for a beginner?

It is designed for one. The guide works from wherever you are — if you have never changed a setting off automatic, the first hour covers that, and the route still covers the same locations.
