Street Food & Local Life Tour

Nine tastings, two continents, no shopping stops.

Two Continents, Nine Tastings

This is a five-hour private street food tour of Istanbul covering eight to nine tastings across Karaköy and Kadıköy, including a Bosphorus ferry crossing and a sit-down plate at a local restaurant. It starts at 10:00 at Karaköy Square and costs €70 per person.

Istanbul's street food does not live in Sultanahmet. It lives in Karaköy before noon, when the stalls serve breakfast only and close by one, and in Kadıköy's market streets, where the people who cook it also queue for it. This route covers both sides of the water because the two districts eat differently.

  • Karaköy street food at the start, when the stalls are freshest

  • Kadıköy market district with a local food guide
  • Sit-down stops as well as street stalls — not a walking snack queue
  • No shopping stops, no carpet shops, no commission detours

How the Morning Runs

Karaköy — the first five tastings10:00 – 11:45

The morning starts where the city eats breakfast: simit from a cart, kaymak and honey, a wet burger at the counter that made it famous, and two stops off Karaköy Square that serve only until midday. Your guide orders, you eat, and the history comes between shops rather than before them.

Bosphorus ferry crossing12:00 – 12:25

The crossing from Karaköy to Kadıköy is 25 minutes on a public ferry — the same boat locals use, not a tour vessel. Tea in the glass on deck is the sixth tasting; the palaces and the Maiden's Tower are the view.

Kadıköy market district12:30 – 14:00

The market streets behind the ferry terminal: cheese sellers, picklers, a fishmonger who grills what you point at, and a baklava shop that has been on the same corner for four decades. Two or three more tastings here, then a sit-down plate at a local restaurant.

Turkish coffee and return14:00 – 15:00

Coffee brewed on sand at a Kadıköy café, with the option to continue into the neighbourhood food streets on your own. Your guide marks the rest on a map and arranges your return ferry or taxi.

About This Experience

Istanbul's street food does not live in Sultanahmet. It lives in Karaköy before noon, when the stalls serve breakfast only and close by one, and in Kadıköy's market streets, where the people who cook it also queue for it. This tour covers both sides of the water because the two districts eat differently — the European side is fast and workday, the Asian side is slower and more generous.

Eight to nine tastings sounds like a lot, and it is: portions are deliberately small and the walking between stops is real, so the tour is a meal rather than a snack crawl. It suits travellers who want the food without the research, and vegetarians — tell us at booking and the route is rebuilt around vegetable and dairy stops instead of meat.

When To Go

This tour depends on the market, not the weather: it runs Tuesday to Saturday, because Sunday and Monday are when the Kadıköy stalls restock and half the shops close. Spring and autumn are the comfortable months — the route is outdoors for most of five hours. July and August are hot; the tour then starts at 09:30 and adds a longer sit-down stop at midday. Rain does not cancel it, but the Karaköy section shortens and the indoor counters get busier. Ramadan changes everything — the best version of this tour in Ramadan runs after sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much food is it in total?

Eight to nine tastings plus one sit-down plate, which together is a full lunch and then some. Guests rarely eat dinner afterwards. Portions are small on purpose so the tastings do not become endurance.

Can you cater for vegetarians or allergies?

Yes, with notice at booking. The vegetarian route swaps meat stops for vegetable, cheese and pastry ones rather than just removing courses. Nut allergies, gluten intolerance and halal requirements are all workable — tell us in advance, not on the day.

Is alcohol included?

No. The tastings are food and soft drinks, including Turkish tea and coffee. Alcohol is not part of the route, though your guide will point out places to drink afterwards.

Where does the tour start and end?

It starts at Karaköy Square, five minutes from the T1 tram, and ends in Kadıköy around 15:00. Hotel transfers are not included because the two ends are on different continents; your guide arranges your return ferry or taxi.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The tastings are child-friendly, the ferry crossing is the highlight for most of them, and the walking is about 3 km with sit-down stops. Children under 6 join free and eat from your plate.
