What to See in Cappadocia

The Göreme Open Air Museum holds rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes dating from the 10th to 12th centuries. It is the region’s UNESCO World Heritage centrepiece.

The underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı go eight levels deep, with stables, wineries, chapels and ventilation shafts carved into the soft rock. Derinkuyu alone could shelter thousands.

The valleys are best seen on foot, by ATV or from the air. Rose Valley and Love Valley are named for their rock formations, Pigeon Valley for its carved dovecotes, and Devrent for its animal-shaped pillars. Uçhisar Castle, the highest point in the region, gives a 360-degree view of the whole plateau.

North of the valleys, Avanos sits on the Kızılırmak river and has been a pottery town for centuries. Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa hold Ottoman Greek stone houses worth a half day.

Hot Air Balloon Flights

Flights take off shortly before sunrise and last around 60 minutes, drifting over the fairy chimneys, Rose Valley and Göreme at 500 to 900 metres. Breakfast and hotel pickup are included, and passengers receive a signed flight certificate.

We book operators licensed by the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority, with pilots certified annually. Baskets range from standard shared to comfort and fully private.

Flights depend on wind and are cancelled by the civil aviation authority when conditions are unsafe. This happens more often in winter. If your flight is cancelled, you are rebooked to the next available morning or fully refunded — your choice.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Two days is the standard. One morning for the balloon flight, one full day for the valleys, the underground cities and Göreme.

Three days lets you add the Turkish night show, a hammam and a dervish ceremony without rushing, and gives you a second chance at the balloon if your first morning is cancelled.

One day is possible from Istanbul by early flight, but it works only if the balloon is not part of your plan — the timings do not fit.

Getting to Cappadocia

Two airports serve the region. Kayseri (ASR) is about an hour from Göreme; Nevşehir (NAV) is around 40 minutes. Both have frequent direct flights from Istanbul, usually around 75 minutes.

We arrange flights, private transfers and full packages with cave hotel accommodation. By road from Istanbul it is around nine hours, and overnight buses from Ankara and Istanbul are also common.

Best Time to Visit

April to June and September to November bring the most reliable balloon conditions, mild temperatures and manageable crowds.

July and August are hot, with daytime temperatures above 30°C, though mornings remain cool enough for flights. Winter is quiet and cheap, and snow on the fairy chimneys is spectacular — but cancellations rise and some tours run less often.

Balloons fly year-round. There is no month when flights are suspended entirely.
