Istanbul Classics Private Full Day

Six monuments, one peninsula — the Old City in a single day.

Six Monuments, One Walkable Square Kilometre

This is a private full-day tour of Istanbul's historic peninsula, covering Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. The tour runs eight hours, starts at 09:00 with hotel pickup from central Istanbul, and costs €150 per person with a licensed English-speaking guide.

Istanbul is the only city in the world that has served as the capital of three empires, and its Old City holds the evidence within a single walkable square kilometre: the Byzantine cistern beneath the streets, the Ottoman palace above them, and the Roman hippodrome in between. All museum tickets are bought on your behalf, lunch is arranged at a local restaurant, and the pace adjusts to your group.

What You'll Experience

Topkapı Palace09:30 – 11:00

The seat of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. Your guide walks you through the Imperial Treasury, the Baghdad Kiosk and the Harem, where the sultan's family lived under a separate hierarchy of its own.

Hagia Sophia11:15 – 12:15

Built in 537 under Justinian and converted to a mosque in 1453, Hagia Sophia held the record as the world's largest cathedral for almost a thousand years. The dome, the mosaics and the Islamic calligraphy share one roof — a building that records the city's whole history in a single room.

Basilica Cistern12:20 – 12:50

An underground reservoir built in 532 to supply the Great Palace, held up by 336 marble columns. The two Medusa heads at the far end sit sideways and upside down — nobody knows why, and your guide will give you the competing theories.

Lunch12:50 – 13:45

Lunch at a local restaurant in Sultanahmet, included in the price. Vegetarian options are available; tell your guide about allergies at the start of the day.

Hippodrome of Constantinople13:50 – 14:10

The chariot-racing track that served as the city's social centre for a thousand years. The Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column and the Walled Obelisk still stand where the crowds once sat.

Blue Mosque14:15 – 14:50

Completed in 1617, still an active mosque, and the only one in Istanbul with six minarets. Entry is free; your guide handles the dress code and the timing around prayer hours.

Grand Bazaar15:00 – 16:30

One of the world's oldest covered markets, with 61 streets and roughly 4,000 shops under one roof. Free time to browse, or your guide can walk you through the workshops of the trades that built the bazaar.

Hotel drop-off: 17:00

Tour Overview

Istanbul is the only city in the world that has served as the capital of three empires, and its Old City holds the evidence within a single walkable square kilometre: the Byzantine cistern beneath the streets, the Ottoman palace above them, and the Roman hippodrome in between. Because the six sites sit within 600 metres of each other, a private guide who knows the entry queues can move you between them while group tours are still waiting at the gate.

The tour suits first-time visitors who want the essentials covered properly in a single day, and travellers with two days in Istanbul who would rather see six things properly than twelve from a coach window.

Good to Know

  • Walking distance is approximately 3.5 km, mostly flat, with two indoor rest stops
  • Museum tickets are purchased on your behalf; total entry fees are around €75 per person and are paid separately
  • Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays — the route is reordered on that day to start with Hagia Sophia
  • The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays; the time is replaced with the Spice Bazaar
  • Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque require shoulders and knees covered; headscarves are provided free at both
  • The Blue Mosque closes to visitors for 30 minutes around each of the five daily prayers
  • Comfortable shoes are recommended; the Grand Bazaar paving is uneven

When To Travel

March to May and September to November give the most comfortable walking temperatures, between 15°C and 24°C, with shorter queues at Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia. July and August reach 32–34°C; the route then adds a longer indoor break at the Basilica Cistern and starts 30 minutes earlier. December to February is quiet and cool at 5–10°C, and the Grand Bazaar is at its most relaxed. Avoid the first week of Ramadan and the Kurban Bayramı holiday, when several sites close for part of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you pick up from my hotel?

Yes. Pickup is included from hotels in Sultanahmet, Taksim, Beşiktaş, Şişli, Karaköy and Beyoğlu. Pickup starts between 08:30 and 08:50 depending on your location. If your hotel is outside these districts, we set a central meeting point two minutes' walk from the first site.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. The route is about 3.5 km on mostly flat ground with two rest stops. Children under 6 join free, child seats are available on request, and the guide adjusts the pace for families. It is not recommended for travellers with limited mobility, because the Grand Bazaar section involves uneven paving and narrow passages.

Are museum tickets included in the price?

No. The price covers the guide, the private vehicle, hotel transfers and lunch. Entrance fees are approximately 75 EUR per person and are paid separately on the day — your guide purchases them so you skip the ticket lines.

What happens if it rains?

The tour runs in all weather. Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar are all indoors, so roughly 80% of the route is covered. Bring an umbrella for the short walks between sites.

How do I book and when do I pay?

Book through the form on this page or email [email protected]. We confirm within 24 hours, send your guide's name and phone number 48 hours before the tour, and take payment on the day by card or cash.

Can we customise the route?

Yes. Tell us at booking which sites matter most to you. Many guests swap the Grand Bazaar for the Spice Bazaar or add the Chora Church mosaics. Changes are free as long as they stay within the eight-hour window.

Build the day around your group

This itinerary is a starting point, not a fixed script. Groups with children add rest stops; photographers start earlier for the light; first-time visitors sometimes drop the Grand Bazaar for the Chora Church. Send us your dates, group size and what matters most, and a licensed guide will draft a route for you.
