ITINERARY

What You'll Experience

Süleymaniye Mosque09:30 – 10:40

Sinan's masterpiece, completed in 1557 for Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The courtyard gives the best panorama of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus in the city — the view Ottoman architects designed the building to frame. Shoulders and knees covered; scarves provided.

Tekfur Palace11:00 – 11:40

Built as part of the Blachernae Palace complex in the 13th or 14th century, Tekfur Sarayı is the only surviving section of a Byzantine palace in Istanbul. Closed on Mondays — the route reorders around it.

Chora Mosque12:00 – 12:50

Formerly the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora, holding the finest surviving cycle of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes: the ancestry of Christ, the life of the Virgin, the Last Judgment. Now a working mosque, so the art is seen around prayer times. Subject to restoration closures; the route substitutes the Fethiye Mosque when needed.

St Stephen Church13:05 – 13:35

A Bulgarian Orthodox church prefabricated in Vienna in 1871 and shipped down the Danube in 500 pieces. Built entirely of cast iron, it is one of very few such churches in the world, standing on the bank of the Golden Horn in Balat.

Fener and Balat13:45 – 15:20

The Greek Patriarchate at Fener, the red-brick Phanar Greek Orthodox College on its hill, then the colourful timber houses of Balat where Jewish, Greek and Armenian communities lived side by side for centuries. Lunch at a local restaurant along the way.

Hotel drop-off: 16:00

Tour Overview

The Golden Horn is the inlet that made Istanbul defensible — a natural harbour protected on one side by the sea and on the other by the city walls. Between Süleymaniye and Balat, six centuries of that defence sit within two kilometres of shoreline, and almost no visitors walk it.

This is not a highlights tour. It is the quiet half of the Old City: one Ottoman mosque, one Byzantine palace, one Byzantine mosaic cycle, one cast-iron church and two neighbourhoods that kept their shape after everyone who built them had left.

The tour suits repeat visitors, travellers interested in Byzantine art, photographers, and anyone who wants a day away from the crowds of Sultanahmet.

When To Travel

Spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable periods, at 15–24°C, and the light on the Golden Horn is best in the late afternoon. Summer reaches 32°C; Balat holds the heat between its stone walls, so the route then starts at 08:30 and adds a longer lunch break. Winter is quiet and cool at 6–12°C, and the neighbourhood streets are at their most atmospheric — but the cobbles are slippery after rain, so wear proper shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Chora mosaics always visible?

Chora Mosque is periodically closed for restoration, and as a working mosque it closes around prayer times. We check its status the week before your tour; if it is closed, Fethiye Mosque — also a Byzantine church with mosaics — is substituted and the ticket difference is refunded.

Is this tour suitable for children?

It works for older children interested in history, but it is a walking and looking tour rather than an activity tour. Families with younger children usually prefer the Old City half-day, where the sites are closer together.

How much walking is involved?

About 3.5 km across six hours, with long stops at each site and a vehicle between the districts. The steepest section is the climb from Fener to the Greek Orthodox College, which can be skipped.

Can we visit the Greek Patriarchate inside?

The courtyard and the Church of St George at the Patriarchate are open to visitors outside services. Your guide will check the schedule on the day and include it if it is open.

Do you offer this route as a photography tour?

Yes — Balat and Fener are the most photographed neighbourhoods in Istanbul. The route can start at 08:00 for empty streets or at 15:00 for the late light. Mention it at booking.
