Topkapı Palace Guided
Explore The Magic of Istanbul
This is a three-hour private guided tour of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul,
covering all four courtyards, the Harem and the Imperial Treasury with a
licensed historian-guide. The tour starts at 09:30 at the Gate of
Salutation, skips the ticket queue with pre-purchased entry, and costs
€100 per person.
Topkapı was not a single residence but a walled town: a government, a
court, a treasury and a harem of more than 300 rooms inside one set of
walls. Visitors without a guide typically walk the first two courtyards
in forty minutes and leave — the Harem and the Treasury, which are the
reason to come, sit at the back of the complex.
The tour suits travellers who want the Ottoman half of Istanbul’s story
properly explained, and visitors who have already seen Hagia Sophia and
want the palace that replaced Byzantium with something else entirely.

ITINERARY
What You'll Experience
Enter through the Gate of Salutation, the threshold beyond which only the sultan's household could pass. Your guide sets out how the palace worked as a government, a court and a home at the same time, for nearly 400 years.
More than 300 rooms built over four centuries, added to by successive sultans. The guided route covers the Courtyard of the Eunuchs, the sultan's private apartments and the Hall of the Ablution Fountain — the part of the palace most visitors walk past without a guide.
Four rooms of objects the empire collected: the Topkapı Dagger, the Spoonmaker's Diamond, thrones, and the relics the sultans held as caliphs. Your guide points out what is genuinely rare and what is ceremony.
The Baghdad Kiosk, the Revan Kiosk and the terrace above the Bosphorus — the view the sultans kept for themselves, looking over the Golden Horn to Galata and the Asian shore.
Exit past the tulip gardens of the Third Court. Your guide points you toward the Archaeological Museums, Hagia Sophia or the nearest tram stop, whichever you need next.
Tour ends at the Topkapı Palace exit, Sultanahmet
Tour Overview
Topkapı is not one building but a walled town: four courtyards, a harem of 300 rooms, a treasury and a working government, all inside one set of walls above the Bosphorus. Without a guide, most visitors walk the first two courtyards in forty minutes and leave — the Harem and the Treasury, which are the reason to come, sit at the back.
This three-hour private tour covers the whole complex in order, with pre-purchased tickets so the entry queue does not take a third of your morning. It suits visitors who want the palace properly explained and travellers who have already seen Hagia Sophia and want the Ottoman half of the story.

When To Travel
April to June and September to November are the best months: 16–25°C, and the courtyards are comfortable to stand in while your guide talks. July and August reach 33°C and the palace has little shade between courts — book the 09:00 slot, which finishes before the heat. Winter is quiet and cool at 6–12°C, and the treasury rooms are actually easier to see without summer crowds. Friday mornings are the busiest year-round.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Harem included in the ticket?
Yes. The Harem requires a separate ticket at the gate, and it is included in the price of this tour. It is also the part of the palace most visitors miss, which is why the guided route spends a full hour there.
How do we skip the queue?
Tickets are purchased in advance for your group. You meet your guide at the Gate of Salutation and enter through the group entrance — the ticket line, which can reach 45 minutes in summer, is bypassed entirely.
Is three hours enough for the whole palace?
It covers the four courtyards, the Harem and the Treasury in order, at a walking pace with stops. Groups that want longer at the Treasury or the pavilions usually extend to four hours — mention it at booking.
Is the palace open every day?
No. Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays, and no tours run that day. On other days the palace opens at 09:00, which is why the first tour slot is also the quietest.
Can we combine this with Hagia Sophia?
Yes. The palace exit is five minutes' walk from Hagia Sophia. Many guests book the 09:00 palace tour and visit Hagia Sophia afterwards; we can add a guide for the second site or leave you with a route.
