Carpet & Ceramic Workshop
Two Crafts at the Loom and the Wheel
This is a guided visit to a working carpet workshop and a ceramic studio in Istanbul, including a weaving demonstration, an İznik tile painting session, hands-on time at the potter's wheel and hotel transfers. It takes about three hours and costs €50 per person.
The version sold in the bazaar is a degraded copy of something that was once extraordinary. This visit goes to the workshops themselves, where the looms are vertical, the dyes are natural and the potters still throw by hand — and where nothing is offered for sale.

About This Experience
Two crafts, one workshop, and the same problem in both: the version sold in the bazaar is a degraded copy of something that was once extraordinary. This visit goes to the workshops themselves, where the looms are vertical, the dyes are natural, and the potters still throw by hand.
You watch a silk carpet being woven — roughly nine months of work for a medium rug — and learn how to read a motif rather than how to buy one. The ceramics half is hands-on: a demonstration of İznik tile painting, then time at the wheel. It suits travellers who want to understand the craft and buy nothing, and it involves no shop pressure.

When To Go
Both workshops are indoors and open year-round, which makes this the best bad-weather option in the city. It is at its most comfortable in spring and autumn, when the studios are cool and the natural light comes through the roof windows. In July and August the pottery kilns make the ceramics studio genuinely hot by mid-afternoon — book the morning slot. Artisans work Monday to Saturday; on Sundays only the ceramic studio is open.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any sales pressure?
No. The workshops are working studios, not showrooms, and the visit does not end in a shop. If you want to buy something, ask your guide and we arrange it separately — otherwise nothing is offered.
Do we get to make something ourselves?
Yes, at the potter's wheel, with an artisan guiding your hands. The piece is not fired and shipped — it is a demonstration of technique, not a production session. Firing and shipping can be arranged for an extra charge.
How long does the visit take?
Around three hours including transfers: about an hour at the carpet workshop, an hour and a half at the ceramics studio, and the rest in the vehicle between them.
Is it suitable for children?
It is one of the best experiences in the city for children. The pottery wheel is hands-on, and artisans are used to young visitors. Children under 6 join free.
Are the carpets really handmade?
The ones on the vertical looms are, and you will see the difference in the knot count and the back of the rug. Your guide shows you how to tell a hand-knotted carpet from a machine-made one, which is the useful part.
