ITINERARY

What You'll Experience

Pre-dawn pickup03:00 – 04:15

Pickup from your hotel in Kahta or Adıyaman and the climb to the summit in the dark. The drive takes about 45 minutes, then a 20-minute walk up the marked path to the east terrace.

Sunrise at the summit04:30 – 06:00

The east terrace holds the colossal seated statues of Antiochus I and the gods he aligned himself with — Zeus, Apollo, Heracles and Tyche. Their heads fell from the bodies centuries ago and now sit upright in rows. Sunrise reaches them before anything else in the region.

West terrace and the tumulus06:00 – 07:00

The west terrace faces the opposite direction and holds a second set of statues, plus the relief panels of Antiochus shaking hands with each god. The 50-metre cone of loose stones between the terraces is the tomb itself, unexcavated since antiquity.

Arsameia07:30 – 08:30

The summer capital of Commagene, on the river below. The site holds the largest known Greek inscription in Anatolia, carved into a rock face, and a tunnel stairway descending 158 metres into the hillside — purpose still debated.

Cendere Bridge and Karakuş Tumulus08:45 – 10:00

Cendere is a Roman bridge built by the Legio XVI Flavia Firma around 200 CE and still standing, with two columns at each end. Karakuş Tumulus nearby is a royal burial mound ringed by columns, one topped with a relief of an eagle.

Return to hotel10:00 – 11:00

Return to your hotel for breakfast. The rest of the day is free — most guests sleep, then visit Adıyaman or continue toward Göbeklitepe the next morning.

Hotel drop-off: 11:00

Tour Overview

Mount Nemrut is a 2,150-metre peak where a king who ruled a small kingdom between two empires decided to be buried as a god. Antiochus I of Commagene built the tomb-sanctuary in the 1st century BCE, aligned it with the sunrise, and left colossal statues of himself seated beside Zeus and Apollo. The heads fell from the bodies in an earthquake; they now sit upright on the terrace, which is why the photographs look staged.

The tour suits travellers interested in ancient history and landscape, and anyone already in the region for Göbeklitepe. The pre-dawn start is not optional — the summit is the point, and the light is the reason.

When To Travel

April to June and September to October give the most reliable sunrise: clear skies, 10–22°C at the summit and a visible horizon. July and August are warm at the base but still 8–12°C before dawn on the summit — the temperature difference catches people out. November to March is cold, often below freezing at the top, and snow can close the access road; on clear winter mornings the light is the best of the year and the site is empty. The road is occasionally closed after heavy snow — we confirm the evening before.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do we leave?

Around 03:00 from Kahta or Adıyaman, so you reach the summit about 30 minutes before sunrise. The exact time shifts through the year — in July it is closer to 03:30, in December closer to 04:30. We confirm the pickup time the evening before.

How difficult is the walk to the summit?

About 20 minutes uphill on a marked stone path, with a few steep sections. Most guests manage it without difficulty, but it is not suitable for wheelchairs or anyone with limited mobility. There is no vehicle access to the terraces.

Are the flights to Adıyaman included?

No. This is a local sunrise tour from your hotel in Kahta or Adıyaman. Domestic flights from Istanbul or elsewhere can be arranged at booking — tell us your dates and we quote the flight separately.

Is sunrise guaranteed?

The tour runs in all weather and the sunrise is never guaranteed. On cloudy mornings the statues and the terraces are still fully visible, and many guests find the site better without direct light. If the access road is closed by snow we cancel and refund in full.

Can we combine this with Göbeklitepe?

Yes, and most guests do. Mount Nemrut is in the morning, then you drive to Şanlıurfa — about three hours — for Göbeklitepe the following day. We arrange both tours and the transfer as one booking.
