Göbeklitepe Private Tour
Discover the Oldest Monumental Ritual Sites on Earth
Step into humanity’s earliest known sacred landscapes on this immersive full day Göbeklitepe Private Tour. Designed for travelers seeking depth, clarity, and expert interpretation, this experience explores Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe, two of the most important sites within the Tas Tepeler region. Göbeklitepe transformed our understanding of early human history. Long before agriculture, cities, or writing, prehistoric communities gathered here to carve monumental stone pillars, construct circular sanctuaries, and develop symbolic and ritual traditions.

ITINERARY
What You'll Experience
Hotel pickup in Istanbul and a two-hour flight to Şanlıurfa GAP Airport. Your guide meets you at arrivals; the drive to Göbeklitepe takes about 25 minutes through the Harran plain.
The oldest known temple complex in the world, dated to around 9500 BCE — 7,000 years before Stonehenge. Circular enclosures of T-shaped limestone pillars, each weighing up to 20 tonnes, carved with foxes, snakes, boars and vultures. The site is roofed and walkable in any weather.
Part of the same Taş Tepeler project and less visited than Göbeklitepe: carved chambers, a rock-cut cistern and one of the earliest known human depictions in relief. Because it opened recently, you often have the site almost to yourself.
Lunch at a local restaurant, then Balıklıgöl in the old town — the pool of sacred carp beside Abraham's Cave, and the reason Şanlıurfa is called the City of Prophets. The bazaar around it is worth the walk.
Harran, 45 minutes south, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth. The conical beehive houses, built without mortar, stay cool at 40°C outside. Afterwards, transfer to the airport and the return flight to Istanbul.

Tour Overview
Göbeklitepe changed what archaeologists thought hunter-gatherers were capable of. The sanctuary was built 11,600 years ago, before agriculture, before pottery, before writing — by people who had not yet settled in villages. The site is roofed and walkable, and the guided route covers both the main enclosure and the new excavations at Karahantepe.
The tour suits travellers interested in prehistory and the origins of religion, and anyone who has done Istanbul and Ephesus and wants the part of Turkey that is older than all of them. Flights from Istanbul are included, which makes it a single long day rather than an overnight.

When To Travel
March to May and October to November are the best months for Şanlıurfa: 20–28°C, dry ground and comfortable walking around the excavated enclosures. April is the peak — the surrounding plain is green and the site is at its busiest. June to September is genuinely hot, at 35–42°C; the route then starts earlier, adds the shaded Balıklıgöl break and moves Harran to late afternoon. Winter is mild at 8–14°C with occasional rain, and Göbeklitepe is at its emptiest — the roofed enclosure means weather does not affect the visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How old is Göbeklitepe exactly?
Around 11,600 years old, dated to roughly 9500 BCE. That makes it about 7,000 years older than Stonehenge and 6,000 older than the pyramids — and it was built by people who had not yet invented agriculture or pottery.
Are flights included?
Yes. Round-trip domestic flights between Istanbul and Şanlıurfa are included, along with all airport transfers. Flight times are confirmed a few days before the tour and usually depart Istanbul before 07:00.
Is the site accessible for wheelchairs or limited mobility?
The main enclosure at Göbeklitepe has a paved, level path and is accessible. Karahantepe and Harran are not — both involve uneven ground and steps. Tell us at booking and we adjust the route so the accessible sites are prioritised.
Can we stay overnight in Şanlıurfa instead?
Yes, and many guests do — Şanlıurfa has good hotels and the old town is worth an evening. We can book a hotel and return the following day. Ask at booking.
Is this tour suitable for children?
For older children interested in history, yes. The site is a series of stone enclosures rather than hands-on exhibits, and the day is long. Families with younger children usually prefer to stay overnight and split the visits across two days.
