Private Half Day Istanbul Tour

Four monuments before lunch, with the queues removed.

Four Monuments Before Lunch

This is a private half-day tour of Istanbul's Old City covering Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar. It runs four hours, starts at 09:00 with hotel pickup from central Istanbul, and costs €120 per person with a licensed English-speaking guide.

Four hours is enough for the Old City's four essentials — they sit within 600 metres of each other — but only if you move through the entry queues without stopping. A solo traveller buying tickets at each gate spends roughly 90 minutes of the four standing in line. A private guide with pre-purchased tickets removes that entirely.

What You'll Experience

Hagia Sophia09:15 – 10:00

Built in 537 under Justinian and converted to a mosque in 1453, Hagia Sophia held the record as the world's largest cathedral for almost a thousand years. The dome, the Eastern Roman Empire mosaics and the Islamic calligraphy share one roof — a single building that records the city's entire history.

Blue Mosque10:10 – 10:50

Completed in 1617 and still an active mosque, the only one in Istanbul with six minarets. Entry is free; your guide handles the dress code and times the visit around prayer hours. Inside, more than 20,000 hand-painted İznik tiles give the building its name.

Basilica Cistern11:00 – 11:30

An underground reservoir built in 532 to supply the Great Palace, held up by 336 marble columns. The two Medusa heads at the far end sit sideways and upside down — nobody knows why, and your guide will give you the competing theories.

Grand Bazaar11:45 – 12:45

One of the world's oldest covered markets — 61 streets and roughly 4,000 shops under one roof, trading since 1461. Free time to browse, or your guide can walk you through the workshops of the trades that built the bazaar.

Hotel drop-off: 13:00

Tour Overview

Four hours is enough for the Old City's four essentials — they sit within 600 metres of each other — but only if you move through the entry queues without stopping. A solo traveller buying tickets at each gate spends roughly 90 minutes of the four standing in line. A private guide with pre-purchased tickets removes that entirely.

The tour suits travellers on a short stopover, cruise passengers with a morning ashore, and anyone who wants the Old City covered before an afternoon flight. It ends at the Grand Bazaar, ten minutes' walk from Sultanahmet tram stop.

When To Travel

March to May and September to November give the most comfortable walking temperatures, between 15°C and 24°C, with shorter queues at Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. July and August reach 32–34°C; the morning start means you finish before the hottest hours. December to February is quiet and cool at 5–10°C, and the Grand Bazaar is at its most relaxed. Avoid the first week of Ramadan and the Kurban Bayramı holiday, when several sites close for part of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you pick up from my hotel?

Yes. Pickup is included from hotels in Sultanahmet, Taksim, Beşiktaş, Şişli, Karaköy and Beyoğlu, starting between 08:30 and 08:50. If your hotel is outside these districts, we set a central meeting point two minutes' walk from Hagia Sophia.

Can this tour fit around a cruise schedule?

Yes, and it is one of our most booked tours for cruise passengers. With a 09:00 start you are back at the port by 13:30. Tell us your ship's departure time at booking and we adjust the route order to protect it.

Are museum tickets included in the price?

No. The price covers the guide, the private vehicle and hotel transfers. Entrance fees are approximately €50 per person and are paid separately on the day — your guide purchases them so you skip the ticket lines.

Is four hours enough to see all four sites?

Yes, if the entry queues are handled. Group tours often manage only two sites in the same window. Because tickets are pre-purchased and the four sites sit within 600 metres of each other, this route covers all four with time inside each one.

What happens on Fridays?

Hagia Sophia closes to visitors between 12:00 and 14:30, and the Blue Mosque admits visitors after 14:30. On Fridays the guide reverses the route and starts with the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar.

Can I book an afternoon start instead?

Yes. The same route runs from 13:30 to 17:30 on request, subject to opening hours. Mention it when you book.

Build the day around your group

This itinerary is a starting point, not a fixed script. Groups with children add rest stops; photographers start earlier for the light; first-time visitors sometimes drop the Grand Bazaar for the Chora Church. Send us your dates, group size and what matters most, and a licensed guide will draft a route for you.
